Care and common sense
The questions people ask us after the repair are often more interesting than the ones before. We have written up the useful ones here, covering care, safety and the choices that come with a new door.

The questions that come up

Repair & Maintenance
How long does the visit usually take?
Plan for roughly an hour for a single door in ordinary condition, and longer for a double door, a second door on the property, or a door with a history that needs following up. Maintenance done on the spot adds a few minutes. A post-impact assessment, where the technician traces the force through the hardware, takes longer than a routine check. You are told at the door if the scope is growing. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Can a tune-up make my noisy door quieter?
Usually, yes, and often dramatically. Most garage door noise comes from dry hinge pins, dry roller bearings and hardware that vibration has loosened, and those three are exactly what a tune-up addresses. Some noise comes from parts that have worn, such as a roller gone out of round or a chain that has stretched, and the technician tells you which sounds were settled by maintenance and which point to a part worth replacing, with a separate quote for that. Should I choose nylon or steel replacement rollers?
Both work when matched to the door. Steel rollers are durable and cope with heavy doors but run louder; nylon rollers with sealed bearings are noticeably quieter and need less attention, which suits an attached garage under a bedroom. What matters more than the material is the stem length and wheel size matching the hinges and track, and replacing all the rollers together so the door rides evenly on every one. My door is insulated. Does the new section need the same insulation?
It should. Insulated sections come in different thicknesses and core types, and the replacement needs to match yours so the joints line up, the hinges sit at the right depth and the weight stays consistent with the springs. Mixing an insulated section into an uninsulated door, or the reverse, generally means a step at the joint and a change in balance. The technician reads the thickness and core type from the door before ordering. Garage Door Panel Replacement

What is the difference between nylon and steel rollers?
Both are a wheel on a steel stem, commonly on ball bearings though standard nylon rollers can be bearingless; the bigger difference is the wheel material. A steel wheel is tough and suits very heavy or commercial doors, but steel on a steel track is loud and grows louder as bearings wear. A nylon wheel wraps a tire around the hub, absorbing vibration rather than passing it into the track, so the door runs more quietly and the wheel never rusts. For most residential doors, nylon is the usual recommendation. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Will new hinges make the door quieter?
Often noticeably. A cracked or loose hinge is the source of many pops, clicks and rattles, and a hinge that holds its roller square lets the wheel run flat instead of scraping the track lip. Combined with fresh lubricant on the knuckles and rollers, the door settles into a steady rumble. Any noise that remains usually points to the rollers, the opener chain or the springs, which the technician can identify for you. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Can a low-headroom or high-lift layout be fitted to my existing door?
Often, yes, and it is a track job with a spring job attached. Low-headroom dual track lets a door open under a low ceiling or a beam, while high-lift track carries the door further up the wall to clear a car lift or storage. Each changes the horizontal run, the curve, the top fixtures and usually the cable drums and spring turns. The technician measures headroom, sideroom and backroom first and confirms the door suits the change. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What are garage door cables made of?
They are galvanized aircraft-type wire rope: many fine steel wires twisted into strands, and the strands laid around a core, which gives a cable that bends around a small drum thousands of times without fatiguing. One end carries a swaged stop or a loop for the drum, the other a loop that fits over the bottom bracket pin. Diameter and length are chosen for the door's weight and height. Will the repair happen during the same visit?
When the cause is a common part carried on the truck, yes: capacitors, gear kits, sensor pairs, trolleys, wall controls, remotes and wiring are typical. When the part is specific to an older model and has to be ordered, or when the diagnosis finds a spring or cable problem that needs its own appointment, the door is left safe and the next step is agreed with you before the technician leaves. Why does the technician lift the door by hand before repairing the opener?
Because the chain only guides a door that the springs already carry. With the operator unplugged and the red handle pulled, a balanced door lifts with moderate effort and holds about a metre off the floor. If it is heavy or sinks, the springs have lost tension and the drive has been hauling weight it was never meant to, which is exactly how gears strip and chains stretch. Correcting the door first means the repaired drive lasts. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
How long does a belt-drive repair take?
A tension adjustment with the safety tests is a short visit. Replacing the belt, trolley or idler pulley, then phasing the motor, relearning limits and running the reversal tests, is usually an hour or two. A gear-and-sprocket kit at the motor head takes longer because the head unit is opened. If the balance test turns up spring work, that is agreed as a separate job with its own time. What is the red cord for?
It is the manual release. A tug on the red handle unhooks the trolley from the door arm so the door can be raised and lowered by hand while the power is off or the operator is being serviced. It hangs high enough to clear a vehicle roof but low enough to reach without a ladder. To reconnect, most units need only be run once and the trolley picks the arm back up; a few take a second tug. Installation & Upgrades
What maintenance can I do myself?
Keep the door path and seal contact areas clean, visually observe cables and rollers from a safe position, and use designated handles for occasional manual checks. Test operator safety functions as its instructions describe. Adjustments to springs, cables or bottom fixtures remain technician work because those components carry the counterbalance forces. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What information should I receive at handover?
Keep the door and opener manuals, product identification, care instructions and a description of the installed hardware. The closeout should also note manual balance, full-cycle travel and applicable safety tests. Window, finish and seal details help with future care, while model and component records make later parts selection more accurate than relying on appearance alone. How are springs chosen for the new assembly?
Spring selection uses the completed door's weight, height, lift arrangement, drum geometry, and expected operating cycle. Reinforcement and windows are included in that calculation. After installation, technicians apply tension with proper winding tools and check manual balance through the travel range, adjusting both sides so cables remain even and the door stays controlled. Does an insulated carriage door make a difference in winter?
Insulated sections can moderate the interior-facing surface and reduce heat flow through the door, particularly when section joints and perimeter seals fit well. The overall result also depends on windows, wall construction, floor gaps and how often the door opens. Selection should compare complete door assemblies and glazing choices, then pair them with carefully fitted bottom, side and top seals. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
